Straight from Da Pen:  R. Moreen Clarke

Moreen grew up in Plainfield, NJ, a small suburban town in central New Jersey. She attended Richard Stockton College in Pomona, NJ where she studied psychology. Her dating experiences in the mid 1990s inspired her first full length novel, In Search of Good Men. In October 2001, In Search Of Good Men was self-published through Xlibris. Relocation to Florida in early 2002 and family circumstances caused a brief pause in her writing endeavors. Encouraged and prodded by friends and fans of her writing, Moreen again began writing in the spring of 2004. The result was her newest novel, If Only In My Dreams (released July 2005, Imprint Books) a story of Internet love gone wrong. Once bitten again by the writing bug, she didn't stop there. Readers were irresistibly drawn to two supplemental characters in this story; twin towers chocolate and caramel male perfection in the bodies of Trevor Calhoun and Damian Adams. Their story comes to life in a hot, sexy erotic new novel scheduled for release in May 2007 through Kensington Books’ Aphrodisia line. Filled with steamy sensuality and intrigue, this is a story you won't want to miss. Moreen currently resides in Florida with her husband and is working on her 4th novel, along with her online soap opera.

The Interview

What drove your decision to self-publish your first two novels, In Search of Good Men and If Only in My Dreams?

I self-published ISGM because of the numerous rejection letters I was getting. I’d received feedback from a few agents who told me I was a good writer, but they couldn’t take on the project. So, it seemed like self-publishing was the best option. I was a novice at it then. When it came to making the decision to self-publish If Only In My Dreams, I sent out twice as many inquiries to agents and publishers. I did my homework this time to make sure the agent was accepting submissions in my genre and I had three pairs of eyes editing the manuscript. Again the same response, no one was willing to take it on – although the agent compliments were even better. I was frustrated, but wanted to keep moving forward so I self-published.

Pitch to us In Search of Good Men (ISGM) in 50 words or less.
A single divorcee dates a series of men in her search for Mr. Right. She finds out along the way that there is no perfect man. In her journey of self-discovery, she exposes her own unrealistic expectations. It is funny and sad, yet very realistic at the same time.

What are some of the themes found in ISGM?
At some point in our lives, we have or will fall in ‘stupid love’. Dexter is one of the characters who strike a chord with most women. Dexter represents ‘stupid love’ and is like a 5-gallon tub of chocolate ice cream. It looks so good, you know you’re lactose intolerant, and if you continue eating it you're going to keep getting a whole lot of crap – but you can’t stop yourself. Stupid love is stepping outside of yourself and doing things you know are wrong to be with someone who will never be worthy of you anyway.
Another is Kevin, who represents a woman’s intuition – if your intuition kicks up and says something isn’t right here – don’t ignore it.

Your second novel, If Only in My Dreams (IOIMD) is a story of Internet love gone wrong. Have you ever tried Internet dating?
Yes, it is a viable source for meeting people you would never have met otherwise.

You have an online soap opera titled Within These Pages. Tell us a bit about it.

Within These Pages is an ongoing story with four central characters from two families, the Thomas and the Gilliard families. Patrice and Portia Gilliard are twins. Brad and Donna Thomas are siblings. Three weeks before their wedding, Brad walked in on his fiancé having sex with his cousin. His honeymoon cruise is already paid for, so he decides to go alone. Portia, jaded and bitter from a bad experience with an old boyfriend has taken a Caribbean cruise to get away from it all and relax. Donna a petite dance instructor suspects that her boss’s wife is hitting on her and the attention is unwelcome. Patrice has a crush on a younger coworker and the feelings are mutual. However, Patrice’s husband is not into sharing.

How successful have you been in getting people to subscribe to the serial?
I’d love to see more people signing up. It’s only been going since January and the episodes are emailed directly to the subscribers every 2-3 weeks. There is an archive folder on my website so even if you start now you can go back to episode 1. The feedback from the subscribers has been great. They ask when the next episode is coming and tell me they can’t wait to see what happens next. I’m trying to find more avenues to get the word out to book clubs and individual readers.

Why did you make the decision to offer Within These Pages for free to your subscribers?
I offered it for free because I am working to expand my readership. Everybody likes to get something for free, why not entertainment in the form of an African American online soap opera? Check out Within These Pages at www.rmoreenclarke.com now.

According to your website, your next work, The Handy Man, was picked up by Kensington Books. Congrats! How was your journey to traditional publication?
Thankfully, my journey to traditional publication was not too terribly long in literary terms, 5 years. I had a lot of faith in The Handy Man, and I knew it was my best work thus far. I have a core group of readers, whom I rely on, to tell me if the book hits the mark. Across the board: Black, White, and Hispanic, male and female from as young as 21 to as mature as 57, they all enjoyed the story. It was just a matter of finding an agent who believed in me. I was extremely lucky to connect with Regina Brooks, of Serendipity Literary Agency.

What drives you as a writer?
I love creating characters and storylines. I thrive on positive feedback from my readers. If I can take your mind away from the mundane everyday chores we all face for a short span of time and make you laugh, smile or ponder the possibilities, then I’ve done the job I set out to do.

If you were not a writer, what would be your dream career?

I’d be a world traveler. I love exploring new places.

What projects are you working on now? Any conferences, or book signings in the near future?
I'm currently working on edits for The Handy Man and my fourth novel, which is not titled at the moment, but I promise will be as hot and sexy as The Handy Man. As for my calendar I have nothing yet, but I’ll be sitting in with a panel of authors for the Art Explosion at the Ezell Hester Community Center in Boynton Beach July 14-16. I’ll also be at the Miami Book Fair this year in November.  Visit my website www.rmoreenclarke.com for details.
