Straight from da Pen:  What is PILOT PUBLISHING?

A Talk w/ Gwen Williams, Sales & Marketing Mgr. for Pilot Publishing

Is there a specific meaning for naming the company PILOT?

Pilot is the owner’s grandfather’s last name. He taught Rochan how to read as he read the morning paper and that started his love for literacy. When Rochan started the publishing company, he felt compelled to keep his grandfather’s name going.

When did the idea for Pilot Publishing Group originate?

Pilot was started to publish Rochan’s first novel, Gangsta Lean. Not getting the response he wanted to hear from publishers, he decided to go the self- publishing route and Pilot was born.

How long has the company been in existence?

It’s been three years since Gangsta Lean was printed, but it got picked up by Qboro and the company lay dormant until Rochan decided he wanted to do something for other authors in the same position he had once been.

Why does Pilot Publishing Group exist?

Originally, it was in existence to publish Gangsta Lean. It was relaunched when Rochan felt he had been in the industry enough to learn how to help others get their voices heard in the literary world.

Talk to us about your debut publications:

There are three titles that officially started the Pilot name. We have two romance novels and a chick lit/erotica novel.

Are you currently accepting submissions? If so, how might writers learn about your submission policies?

Yes, submissions are being accepted. Writers can go to the webpage www.pilotgrouppub.com and click on the submissions link for the procedures.

What genres are you looking for?

Pilot prides itself for not being boxed into one genre. We are looking for good writing first, the genre doesn’t matter.

On the MySpace page of Pilot Publishing Group, it's stated "many deserving authors get overlooked as more established publishers continue to ignore well-written stories with profound messages in favor of those stories that better fit the formulaic norms of the industry." How are the authors you publish through Pilot Publishing Group different in style, stories, approach to stories than those currently being traditionally published? How are they similar?

There are a lot of great authors out there with diverse stories. Some publishing companies tend to gear themselves toward a specific genre because that is what seems to be hot at the time, which makes some great writers go unnoticed. I would say Pilot authors are different because we don’t go for one specific genre, we just look for the best writing from fresh points of view. They are similar because they are still great writers, trying to pave their way in the literary world.

What type of promotion and marketing are you planning to do for PILOT BOOKS?

We plan to get our books and authors in as many places as possible, give them a chance to be noticed by as many people as we can. We plan to be in all major bookstores and do as many signings with all authors to get them exposure and be able to give the readers a chance to meet them. We plan on advertising on different literary sites and being at book fairs and things of that nature, but our primary focus is getting the books seen and giving the authors a chance to get out and meet readers.

What are your future goals for the company?

Our goals are to continue to give readers a good book to read. We want to continue to find good writers and give them a chance for their voice to be heard, as well as educate them on the publishing industry on any areas they may not be familiar with so that have all the necessary tools to be great. Eventually, we want to publish new books every few months along with having a book in all genres so that any reader will be able to find a book from us to his/her liking.
