So tell us about your latest poetry collection, ROCK AND FIRE; what can we expect from it?
-Rock and Fire - Love Poetry from the Core is an adult-oriented, tell all, situational love book of poetry. It addresses various taboo issues that most people are afraid to discuss or verbalize. Rock and Fire challenges readers to picture themselves in the shoes of the subjects depicted in the poems and find a solution to a relatively sticky situation. The book is unlimited regarding the love subject matter as it encompasses communication, infidelity, romance, lust, the lovey-dovey, commitment, and much more. Expect to be moved, rattled, warmed-up, and cooled-down.
What are three words you'd use to describe ROCK AND FIRE?
-IN YOUR FACE
I know that writers hate to say that they liked this work better or more than another, but yeah, I'm going to put you on the spot, LOL What are three MUST-READ poems in your latest collection and why? (To readers - anyone who buys the book won't stop with just those three - believe me, the whole book is off the chain!)
-TestosterWRONG - Because it highlights a plague that has victimized many in the black community...the downlow.
-Taste Birth - Well...you'll just have to read it for yourself.
-Tested, Huh? - This piece engages probably one of the most serious issues (and its consequences) currently known to man...getting tested for AIDS/HIV.
At the end of the day, what do you hope the reader gets from reading your collection?
-I pray that all readers are prompted to be totally honest with themselves and their significant other when dealing with love and its surrounding issues.
How do you think you have grown as a writer since your first collection: The Looking Heart?
-I humbly feel that my sense of inner peace and comfort has been elevated as I'm no longer hesitant to tell it how it REALLY is. I truly feel that God has blessed me with the application of the aforementioned coupled with a writing style that is easier on the reader's eye...as they are able to feel an even harder poetic punch while enjoying the flow.
Many of our readers are writers and are interested in going the self-publishing route. Can you talk to us about your journey thus far - the advantages and disadvantages you've found in self-publishing?
-Self-publishing, to me, is a method which requires a great deal of faith, responsibility, hard work, and patience. I've been more or less having to
battle in the trenches with retailers, literary agencies, and distributors ever since I became published. It is indeed a daunting task. Moreover many of us self-published authors (who work hard and who are proponents of going the extra mile) have had to deal with "the stereotype" fueled by some throughout the journey who have not taken the appropriate steps by which to establish themselves. Thus prompting many to not take self-published authors seriously. HOWEVER, on the flip-side, my experience as a self-published author has been quite rewarding in that mainly I can pretty much control the who, what, when, why, and how as they pertain to my publishing company and its products. The publishing education that I have acquired while on this quest has been astronomical. In having the opportunity to deal directly with various literary figures all-throughout the publishing chain, it is this interactivity which gives me the satisfaction that is needed to keep the drive alive. The bird's eye view afforded by self-publishing yields a feeling of the utmost confidence as I can see first hand how the money is coming in and going out, the geographic region of most of the readership, and the rate of distribution to the regions in the country.
I highly encourage all first time authors to take the self-publishing route and experience an irreplaceable education along with an unparalleled sense
of freedom.
Where's the "perfect spot" for you to pen your wonderful poetry?
-Honestly, anywhere and any place is perfect. It all has to do with timing. If I have something stirring within or simply have the urge to pen a word or two, if/when the flow begins and can be maintained...my whereabouts really are not a factor.
What inspires you to write?
-Anything from the smallest, minute, and insignificant occurrence to the grandest of all happenings. It can be major or trivial...it ultimately does not matter. If the vibe is right...the pen will write.
They (some collection of people in the universe - lol) believe that good writers are also voracious readers. As a great writer, what are you currently reading? Who are some of your favorite writers?
-I find this question/point quite humorous simply because I've never been a heavy reader. At random, I read bits and pieces of novels, poetry books, and magazine articles. Heck, at times, I may read the Bible, dictionary, or even the encyclopedia. I am a huge Edgar Allen Poe fan. I like Alex Haley, Sonya Sanchez, and Mark Twain as well.
