A Talk with Dedan Tolbert:  The Writer, The Entrepreneur

What does TB&D stand for?

TB&D stands for the original name of the company, Tolbert Books and Distribution.

When did the idea for TB&D originate?

Originally, TB&D was a way for me to market and promote my first book, The Love We Had... and then we later branched off into helping other self published authors get their work out there as well as other services that we offer.

How long as the company been in existence?

TB&D was founded in May of 2006 with the help of a few friends.

Why does TB&D exist?

In a nutshell, the purpose of TB&D is to help self published authors along in their literary journey. In this business, there are a lot of things that you are going to learn from experience. I've had a lot of helpful experiences, so I'd like to make the process as easy for others as I can.

You do a LOT with your company. Talk to us a bit about the services you
offer to potential clients.

As I mentioned earlier, some of our services are publishing, marketing, distribution, editing, web site and graphic design, event planning and counseling/consultation.

What are some of the current projects you've been a part of?

I was a founding member of The Next Generation Literary Group which is an organization that was founded to help aspiring authors get into the industry. I am also the founder of the TB&D Social Club which is a social organization for young professionals who want to network with other like minded, positive individuals. You can view more information about both organizations at www.dedantolbert.com.

If someone is interested in learning more about your services, how can
they best contact you or get information?

The best way to contact me is via email at tolbert_books@hotmail.com or they can feel free to view my website at www.dedantolbert.com.

Not only are you a business owner, but you are also the author of The
Love We Had...
. Pitch us the story in 50 words or less.

The Love We Had... is set on a college campus and is about the main character, Derrick and his love interest Maya who are deeply in love but whose relationship is thwarted by Maya's extremely possessive ex boyfriend who refuses to let her go.

What's the backstory to The Love We Had?

Although The Love We Had... is fictional, its loosely based on my life and experiences from college.

What has the reaction been to The Love We Had...?

The reaction to The Love We Had... has been great. Everyone who reads it, loves it and it was named one of the top 10 books of 2006 by The Writers Inn.com.

Your second publication - “Ask Dedan” Sex, Dating & Relationships -
Volume I - is a collection of your best advice columns. What was the
guiding force behind starting the "Ask Dedan" column?

My friends are constantly asking me for advice, so I decided to start putting it on paper. I currently write for several magazines across the country. You can also find my "Ask Dedan" column on MySpace where I hold daily discussion forums.

How did you become an "expert" in relationships?

I don't consider myself an expert on relationships. I just give my opinion which I've found that people can relate to and identify with.

What are the top three questions you're asked about relationships?

I'd have to say that the top three most popular topics are:  why men cheat, why can't I find a good man, and interracial dating.

You're helping others discover their literary dreams, you're planning
parties, you're designing graphics, you're publishing your books, you're
telling it like it is about relationships -- what's next for you?

Currently, I'm working on the sequel to The Love We Had.... If you liked The Love We Had..., you're going to love the sequel. There will be a lot of twists and turns and leave you guessing the same way The Love We Had... did.
